Fire safety
By law, both the property owner and the tenant have a duty to take precautions to prevent fire. Below is a list with important precautions that you need to have in mind to avoid spreading a fire in your home.
Keep emergency exits clear
It is not allowed to keep garbage, bicycles, shoes or other things, outside the apartments or in the entrances, common areas and corridors, as it can be a fire hazard. The evacuation roads must always be free of objects.
You may be charged a fine if you leave garbage or other things in the corridors and outside the apartments.
Smoke detectors
There are different fire alarm systems in our areas.
In KI Residence Flemingsberg, Strix, Pax and Berzelius väg, the room/apartments are equipped with regular smoke detectors that have batteries that need to be changed once in a while. KI Housing checks the smoke detectors between tenants and the tenant is responsible for notifying us of any deficiency of the detector during the tenancy. If you hear a beeping sound, the battery of the detector needs to be exchanged. Please remove it and submit a maintenance request in the customer portal.
In KI Residence Solna, there is a central fire alarm system. At this link you can read about how the fire alarm system and smoke detectors work in KI Residence Solna.
Never leave lit candles unattended
Use stable and non-flammable candlesticks and do not put lit candles close to inflammable materials or leave them unsupervised.
Do not cover lamps and radiators
It is important not to cover lamps and radiators with clothes or other textiles since it may cause a fire. Portable radiators are not allowed.
Never leave the kitchen when cooking
Always make sure that you have turned off the stove, oven and hot water kettle etcetera when leaving the kitchen.
Always turn off electrical devices when not in use
Turn off and/or pull the plug out when you have finished using the coffee-maker, iron, toaster and charger for mobile phone, tablet or computer.
In case of fire
If a fire starts in your home, this is what to do:
1. Rescue
First of all – save yourself and others.
In case of fire in your room or your apartment – Leave your room/apartment and close the door. Warn your neighbors. Go out to the street or the courtyard.
If the corridor or the staircase are filled with smoke – stay in your room/apartment and close doors and windows since the smoke may be dangerous. Never use the elevator if there is a fire in the building.
When leaving the building, follow the signs and the evacuation plan in your accommodation area.
2. Alarm
When you are safe – call the emergency services on 112.
Tell them what has happened, where you are and your name. Tell them what kind of emergency it is, where the fire has occurred and how many people that might need help.
3. Extinguish
Try to extinguish the fire but do not take any unnecessary risk that may cause you injury.
If there is a small fire – you can try to extinguish it by using a wet towel or a thick piece of textile but do not use synthetic material as it can easily start to burn.
If there is a fire on the stove – turn off the fan as it can easily catch fire and spread the flames. It is important not to try to extinguish burning oil with water. You may use a saucepan lid to suffocate the fire instead.
Other things to think of when there is a fire
Avoid smoke-filled rooms, corridors and stairwells. Remember that smoke always rises so you may therefore get down under the smoke since it is easier to both see and breathe close to the floor.
If you face a closed door – do not open it before you know if there is a fire on the other side of the door or not. You can try to feel along the top of the door and if it is hot, there is probably a fire on the other side. If so, stay where you are and do not open the door.
