Gastroenterology and Nutrition Unit (GUT)

The research at GUT primarily focuses on diseases and processes related to liver disease, nutrition, metabolism, and genetics. The research encompasses the entire spectrum, from basic scientific questions, translational studies, epidemiology, patient-centered research, clinical studies, and studies on disease prevention.

Our research

Hepatology

In hepatology, clinical, epidemiological, and translational studies are conducted with a focus on metabolic liver diseases. Fatty liver is part of the metabolic syndrome, and the prevalence of cirrhosis is increasing due to fatty liver. We conduct studies aimed at identifying at-risk patients, finding new treatment strategies, and preventing severe liver disease. Cirrhosis increases the risk of primary liver cancer and is one of the complications of chronic liver disease. Studies on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are conducted to evaluate biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis. Studies mapping tumor characteristics to provide personalized treatment (personalized medicine) are also ongoing. Research on autoimmune liver disease, particularly primary sclerosing cholangitis, aims to develop new diagnostic and prognostic tools, search for early cancer markers, and new treatment strategies.

Pancreatic Diseases

Research on pancreatic diseases includes clinical and translational studies on chronic and autoimmune pancreatitis and pancreatic insufficiency. Studies on the connection between the endocrine and exocrine axes are particularly focused (diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, osteopathy, and sarcopenia associated with pancreatic diseases).
