Research

  • The genital microbiome, sex hormones, and hormonal contraceptives are factors that affect susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections. This has been demonstrated in epidemiological and experimental studies across different populations and geographical settings. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these findings need further clarification. Our research group aims to investigate how these factors impact the human female genital mucosa. We collect and analyze genital mucosal samples from cohorts of Swedish and Kenyan women, focusing on microbiome composition, host transcriptomic and protein profiling, as well as distribution of various immune cell populations. Our methods include digitalized in situ imaging analysis, 3D-tissue explant models as well as spatial transcriptomics and other multi-omics analyses of mucosal samples. By uncovering some of the underlying mechanisms related to a dysfunctional mucosal barrier, we hope to contribute to the development of topical prophylactic compounds against sexually transmitted infections, including the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
