Karin Källander
About me
Dr. Karin Källander is a seasoned public health leader with over two decades of diverse expertise in health systems strengthening, digital health transformation, research, and child health program management. Her career spans seven years in a low-income country, nine years with a prominent international NGO, and six years with the United Nations (UNICEF), providing her with a deep understanding of the complex dynamics within the health sector and enabling her to adeptly navigate policy-making arenas and donor landscapes.
Currently, as a Senior Health Specialist at UNICEF, Dr. Källander leads the Implementation Research team. Previously, she served as the global Chief of Digital Health & Information Systems Unit at UNICEF, where she spearheaded numerous digital health initiatives to support women and child health programs, including immunization. As a visionary leader, she has set global agendas and co-founded the COVID-19 Digital Health Centre of Excellence with the WHO during the pandemic.
Her track record includes multi-million-dollar research projects, strategic partnerships, and tangible impact in infectious disease control and community-based care. Dr. Källander holds a PhD in Medical Science (International Health) from ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡, Sweden, and an MSc in Molecular Biology (Pharmacology) from Lund University, Sweden. Her expertise lies in health systems strengthening, innovations and digital health, child health epidemiology, and paediatric healthcare management.
Research
- Karin has extensive experience in operational research, design-,
implementation-, management- and evaluation of programmes, health systems
strengthening, health workforce development, assessment of quality of care,
health policy development, behaviour change and community-based care.
*Current projects include: *
* TRAction - Universal versus conditional three-day follow-up visits for
children with unclassified fever at community level in Ethiopia [1]
* The Acute Repiratory Infection Diagnostic Aids (ARIDA) project [2], which
evaluates community health workers' use of automated respiratory rate
counting aids on children under five in Ethiopia.
